Swarms of Bees, Beetles, & Bugs

Swarms of Bees, Beetles, & Bugs lesson plan

Add "bling" to any science project, such as this insect drawing, with new technology!

  • 1.

Research anatomy of insects you are studying. Note the names of their body parts. Sketch them on paper with Crayola® Erasable Colored Pencils. Erase and draw again until you are satisfied that your drawings are accurate.

  • 2.

After you determine how many and which types of insects you’ll include in your swarm, decide on a layout for your finished piece. You could even cut out your practice sketches and arrange them different ways.

  • 3.

Use the Crayola Color Explosion paper and markers to draw your swarm of insects. Pay special attention to thick and thin lines you can create with the marker tip. The paper automatically shows random bright colors inside your lines!

  • 4.

To finish your artwork, choose a simple design for the background. Dots look terrific!

Benefits

  • Students recognize and identify body parts of several different insects
  • Students compare technical drawings of insects and the results of their practiced drawings.

Adaptations

  • Label the body parts.
  • Work in groups, each with a classification of insect, and display your drawings together.
  • Assessment: Check accuracy of the insects’ body parts, their basic shapes, and aesthetic positions on the page.
