Boxy Boats lesson plan

  • 1.

    Learn about, and watch, different types of boats: sailboats, tugs, freight, cruise ships, fishing, canoes, kayaks, steamboat, raft, paddle.

  • 2.

    Ask families to help collect a wide assortment of boxes, foam produce trays, gift-wrap and paper towel rolls.

  • 3.

    To avoid spills, pour paint into flat containers.

  • 4.

    Choose a boat to make, or use your imagination and design one.

  • 5.

    Assemble your boat. Use Crayola® Scissors to cut pieces, such as cardboard rolls to use for smokestacks. Straws make great masts and flagpoles.

  • 6.

    Glue everything together with Crayola® School Glue. Dry overnight.

  • 7.

    Cover your work area with newspaper. Put on a Crayola® Art Smock.

  • 8.

    Paint the boat with Crayola® Washable Paints and So Big® Brushes. Decorate the boat with Crayola® Glitter Glue. Dry overnight.
