On March 16, 1751, James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, was born in Port Conway, Virginia. Madison served in office from 1809 to 1817. He was president when British forces invaded Washington, D.C. on August 24, 1814. That invasion required Madison and other officials to flee while the British burned the Capitol, the president's residence, and most other public buildings. He died in Montpelier, Virginia, on June 28, 1836.
