Sir Charles Tupper was born in Amnerst, Nova Scotia, on July 2, 1821. He was chosen as the minister of public works in 1878, and he organized the building of the transcontinental railway. Tupper became prime minister in 1896, after serving as Canada's high commissioner in London for 13 years.
