Canada's ninth prime minister, Sir Robert Laired Borden, was born in Grand Pre, Nova Scotia, on June 26, 1854. Before becoming prime minister, he practiced law. In 1901, he became leader of the Conservative Party. As prime minister, he decided on a separate Canadian membership in the League of Nations. This helped transform Canada into an independent nation.
