School Fair Cakewalk

School Fair Cakewalk lesson plan

Planning a school carnival or fundraiser? Use Crayola® Washable Sidewalk Paint to create a festive atmosphere, exciting games, and tons of fun for everyone!

  • 1.

What are your favorite school fair or carnival games? Use Crayola® Colored Pencils to make a list of these activities. As a group, decide which ones to include after you get permission to hold a school carnival. One activity you might include is a cakewalk, which is described here. Make sketches of each booth or game.

  • 2.

Plan all the details for the carnival. Decide on carnival committees such as tickets, prizes, a cleanup crew, and other groups. Use Crayola Markers to design posters to advertise your event. Draw tickets for the activities. If school rules allow, decide how to spend any profits from the carnival.

  • 3.

Ask permission before you paint your cakewalk. Crayola Sidewalk Paints are designed for use on concrete or asphalt sidewalks and driveways that are at least 6 months old. With a Crayola Washable Sidewalk Paint Kit, test a spot to make sure the paint will not stain.

Use the paint roller and Crayola So Big Brush in the kit to paint your cakewalk and other booths. A cakewalk is a circle marked with evenly spaced sections large enough for people to walk on. Each section contains either a number or a picture. Draw pictures that illustrate your carnival’s theme.

  • 5.

Air-dry the paint completely. Paints wash from skin with soap and water. Normal laundering procedures remove stains from most cotton, polyester, acrylic fabrics, and their blends. For best results, wash immediately in hot water. Do not use pre-wash produc

  • 6.

  • 7.

When you’re ready for the cakewalk, players each choose a section on which to stand. The caller begins to play music. While the music plays, participants move around the circle. When the music stops, the caller randomly chooses a slip of paper from the bo

Ask the cleanup crew to remove the paint within 2 weeks. Wash surface with the water pressure from a garden hose. Light brushing with a broom or nylon brush may be necessary to remove some paint.

Benefits

  • Children research various suitable school carnival activities.
  • Children work together to plan, design, and run all aspects of a school carnival.

Adaptations

  • When the carnival is over, add up your costs for the event and the amount of money it made. Calculate how much profit your carnival generated. Follow through with your plan for the money.
  • Interview people who help design and participate in the carnival. Assign reporters to cover various activities. When the carnival is over, create a newspaper about it. Publish the paper so your whole school can read about it.
