Raising a creative person is simple and actually a lot of fun. Try to:
1. Create An Art Centre! Provide children with both planned craft projects and spontaneous, single art explorations they can do on their own. Create an Art Centre in your kitchen or family room so your kids can creatively express themselves. Art Centres are great fun and easy to set up.
Kids love to do things for themselves. They act responsibly when treated "grown-up" and know they are responsible for their special art space. Encourage independence and kids will rise to the occasion.
Arts and crafts can be done just about anywhere. Just designate a table and a couple of chairs in a playroom, the basement, or the kitchen. An advantage of “kitchen table crafts” is that young children can easily be supervised by a parent who is busy with other activities in the kitchen. An older child who can work more independently may enjoy setting up an art centre in his or her bedroom.
Shelves and containers are key to keeping the art centre organised. Help your kids stay organised by giving them a place to put everything.
2. Encourage! Encourage children to try new, unique ways of doing things. Don't expect their artwork to look like samples others have made. Encourage kids to come up with their own ways to do crafts. Ask, "I wonder what would happen if..." to inspire their imagination.
3. Build Confidence! Build kids' confidence in their own creative abilities. If they ask you to "make it for them," reply that you'd love to see what they create. Don't expect kids to create artwork that looks like an adult's. Children's fresh and unique styles should be valued.
4. Enjoy Art! Emphasize the enjoyment and the "process" of creating art, more than the results. The aesthetic qualities of a young child's work are not as important as the process used to create them.
5. Display Creations! Celebrate your children's creativity by displaying their art.
