Bike Riders' Rules lesson plan

What are the rules for safe bike riding? Embed a safety message in this colorful helmet poster!

  • 1.

What are the rules for safe bike riding? For example: it's important to wear a helmet, look all ways before changing directions, use lights and reflectors at night. Why are these rules so important to follow? Make a catchy poster to remind your friends about safe bike riding.

  • 2.

On a large piece of paper, use Crayola® Erasable Colored Pencils to sketch a side view of a bike rider's head wearing a bike helmet.

  • 3.

Color in the face and add facial features with Crayola Multicultural Markers.

  • 4.

Inside the helmet, outline in block letters a bike safety message such as WEAR A HELMET or SIGNAL YOUR TURNS. Fill the message with one color of Crayola Washable Markers.

  • 5.

Use your imagination to fill in the rest of the helmet with all kinds of shapes. Fill them in with various marker colors.

  • 6.

Frame your poster on a larger sheet of colored paper if you like.

Benefits

  • Students list rules and regulations concerning responsible bike safety.
  • Students find out why wearing a bike helmet can prevent head injuries.
  • Students promote bike safety awareness by creating a poster containing an embedded safety message.

Adaptations

  • With younger children and those who have special needs, ask an older child to demonstrate rules in a safe area using a real bicycle. Make sure the helmet is current and the bike is working properly.
  • Design a floor-size street map. Make miniature bicycles and traffic signs. Practice safe biking with toys on the map.
  • Discuss the importance of wearing a passenger safety belt. Talk about booster seats for young children. How do they prevent injuries in vehicles? Make posters promoting these safety measures.
  • Create a 3-D ball with six circles showing bike and car safety tips. Fold circle edges to make squares. Draw pictures and write messages on all sides. Glue folded edges together to form a ball.
