On October 5, 1829, Chester Arthur, the 21st president of the United States, was born in Fairfield, Vermont. He always said that his birth date was in the year 1830, but his family Bible said that it was 1829. Arthur served as president from 1881 to 1885. He was nicknamed "Gentleman Boss." He was the first president to add an elevator to the White House, and to set the standard time zones. Arthur died in New York, New York, on November 18, 1886.
