What’s the Weather?

What’s the Weather? lesson plan

  • 1.

Make weather come alive with first-hand sensory experiences. Measure temperatures and precipitation. Hang a windsock and feel the wind blow through hair. Chase shadows. Dance in the rain. Play in the snow.

  • 2.

Study the colors of the sky, cloud shapes, different forms of precipitation. Experiment with shadows, bubbles in the wind, and freezing and thawing.

  • 3.

As children experiment with watercolors, help them figure out how much water to use for to create different color values. Talk about tints (add white) and shades (add black). Paint with wet or dry paper.

  • 4.

What kind of weather do you prefer? What is the sun like? How do the clouds look? Is there wind? Rain? Snow? Imagine a scene.

  • 5.

Cover your work area with recycled newspaper. Put on a Crayola® Art Smock. With Crayola® Washable Watercolors and Brushes on white paper, experiment with different effects. Use more and less water, and mix colors.

  • 6.

Paint a weather scene on heavy paper. Try to capture how this weather feels. Is the light bright or soft? What color and shape are the clouds? Paint an impression of your favorite weather. Dry overnight.
