Color Toss

Color Toss lesson plan

  • 1.

Children who make their own Color Toss are SO creative. Encourage them to choose box sizes, colors, and to set their own rules for play.

  • 2.

Children learn about color (painting, making bags) gain a sense of space (how far to throw), control their energy (how to handle the paint brush and how hard to throw), and cooperate with friends (follow rules).

  • 3.

Supervise while children play. Describe their actions with words (toss, pitch, throw, fly, land, splat). Focus on colors and fun.

  • 4.

Choose a box. Cover your work area with newspaper. Put on a Crayola® Art Smock. With Crayola® Washable Tempera Paint and So Big® Brushes, paint the box inside and out. Dry overnight.

  • 5.

Make color bags to toss. In small zipper bags, place small balls of different colors of Crayola® Dough. Close.

  • 6.

With your friends, decide on rules to play Color Toss. How far away will players stand from the boxes? Must the color of the dough be tossed to the matching box? Will you keep score?
